ROCKY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTE - WAYFINDING SYSTEM
During my time with the Rocky Mountain Institute I managed a project to redesign the sign system for their energy-neutral headquarters building. I commissioned an artist to collaborate with my wayfinding skills to create a more scupltural sign system since this building is also the home of the cofounder of RMI. I was responsible for managing a small budget and big ideas, while working with multiple vendors and suppliers, organization was key.
We needed to create a sign that could incorporate a lot of easily updatable text and a sign that would last for 40+ years. Since the house and therefore the text is constantly changing these two ideas didn't really relate. We created a numbered system that correlates to visitor's guide with the same numbering system. The guides can be printed and updated as needed.
The system also needed to not only last for 40+ years but use energy and resources responsibly, and positivly impact the environment. I needed to manage a small budget for all supplies, delivery, installation, and the artist's time, while working with multiple vendors and suppliers.
The system used local rock for the bases, resin cast discs for the number backings that contained small local rock fragments for coloring and texture, bronze face plates for the numbers with natural patinas, and steel rods also naturally patinaed. Based on a tremendous amount of research all of these materials will last 40+ years in the high altitude, extreme conditions of Aspen, Colorado.
